Intractable Problem: A focus on grading, not learning

Like Healthcare, the Education industry is fraught with problems that keep people awake at night. Choices are numerous: public vs. private funding, teachers as non-unionzed self-regulated professionals vs. unionized tradespeople, streaming vs. non-streaming, mass education vs. home study, and so on.

We’ve selected one that garners a lot of attention: what is the purpose of the K-12 Elementary and High school system? Is it to prepare our children to either enter university or get a job upon graduation? Or is it to equip them with lifelong learning skills? Clearly the former is results-oriented while the latter is process-oriented. Must it be outcome or impact? Can it be a both/and?
