Intractable problem: Safety Culture
The growing complexity and uncertainty in work environments are challenging our current safety practices. Emphasis has predominantly been on training, eliminating errors, imposing compliance rules, reprimanding undesirable behaviours, assessing imagined hazards/risks, and advocating no blame. Although such practices are valid under certain circumstances, they are unable to deal with safety culture issues.
Safety Culture is a Complex domain issue
Safety culture issues are neither simple nor complicated – they are complex. Additionally, safety management today is challenged by accelerating retirement rates, worker transitions, greater reliance on less experienced staff, outsourcing, and increasing demands on performance. The need to evolve how we manage safety has never been greater.
